Who is suitable?
In the rescue dog discipline, there can be no separating the dog from the dog handler because it is always a rescue dog team, dog and dog handler, that is sent on mission in professional rescue dog work. Therefore, demands have to be made of both the dog and the handler which ensure a successful mission and their healthy survival. Both will be exposed to very demanding requirements.
The Rescue Dog
A natural inclination to scent work and a complete lack of nervousness, as well as good health, are all requirements of a rescue dog. A trusting disposition and a complete lack of aggressiveness towards people are obvious requirements as well. Care should be taken to ensure the fitness of the dog as well as a reasonable body weight.
Dogs with a nervous disposition, which have trouble in the environment or with noises (gun shots included) are not suitable.
Dog trainers must be conscious of the fact that dogs must submit to performance testing and medical check-ups at regular intervals and vaccinations must always be up-to-date.
The Rescue Dog Handler
A dog handler must be physically and mentally flexible and rugged, but above all, a team player. A dog handler must be able to assess dangers and be very sensitive to his/her dog and must especially be aware of his/her dog’s limits.
Dog handlers who put the “I” before the “we” and who are focused on achieving the goal at any cost are not suitable.
Basic awareness of first aid, orientation, working with maps and compasses, as well as knowledge of disaster scene markings and the use of technical sonar location equipment belong to the list of requirements of a dog handler in addition to complete vaccinations and the approval form the employer to be let off work at short notice for missions.
